Matthew Soules
Architecture
Do you want a career as a future-shaping, creative radical? Well, may we suggest applying to become Matthew Soules, Super Architect!
Growing up, Soules didn’t know much about architecture, but his talent for drawing led adults to encourage him to pursue it. He shrugged the idea off but a seed of possibility had definitely been planted.
Matthew’s educational journey began at UBC after high school. He got his B.A. in History and Studio Art before eventually graduating from Harvard University with a Master of Architecture. His education and an innate curiousity about how buildings relate to society’s aspirations led Soules to create “surprisingly radical” architecture. “I’m fascinated by how culture is reflected in our homes, offices and civic buildings,” Matthew explained.

Crystals is a sports facility Matthew Soules is working on at the Falls Resort in Vancouver B.C. The building will be the largest facility of its kind in the world, and is set to be completed in 2012.
Soules is a busy guy as he mixes creativity with physics. He is an Assistant Professor at UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape, and the Director/Creator of MSA, an international architecture, urban planning, and research firm. He makes sure his buildings take into account climate, geography, technology, beauty and even philosophy. But the best part of Soules’ day is working with “bright and dynamic students to imagine the cities of the future.”
Soules has advice to aspiring architects and scientists alike, “Consider the various ways in which science and buildings impact our lives and translate it into the kind of world you want to live in. Above all, be brave and innovative in your approach!” Well put Matthew!
